Innsbruck!

MOOSE!
Dad?

Innsbruck was just as amazing as these top two pics - here is a TOP TEN list from the last two days:

10. The weather: it was AMAZING! It was sunny and warm Sunday through Tuesday; at a balmy 20 degrees it was warm enough to walk around in a t-shirt. There were a few oddballs in shorts, but I wouldn't go so far as to say it was comfy enough to be in anything shorter than lederhosen.

9. The scenic drive. It was raining when we left the fine city of Trento, but the sun was waiting for us in Austria; as soon as we tunneled from one country to the other, the sun came out! The misty rain-cloud-soaked mountains were beautiful, but so were the rocky sun-splattered peaks that surround the city of Innsbruck. We also loved the fact that we were there in less than two hours AND that Hendrik slept for most of the drive - andata e ritorno.

8. IKEA- I love Ikea! There are so many fab design ideas there, and way too many things that want to jump into your yellow (or blue) shopping bag (or cart). We managed to do minimal damage - we bought pillows, two mugs, some presents for our boy (we couldn't resist - we bought this and this, oh and this too... love it all), napkins, a rug sticky thing and hm, I think that's it.

7. The Old Town and Maria-Theresien-Strasse. The historic part of Innsbruck is - for lack of a better word - charming. Small streets are lined with ornate buildings that have aged ever-so-gracefully, and shops and cafes (strudel? sausage?) and restaurants abound. One of the main shopping streets (aforementioned) was a fave; we made several stops at several shops - H&M, toy store... and came away with a few goods.

Arvis and Steve doing what guys do... eating, talking sports and drinking beer :)
 6. Seeing Arvis! - Arvydas Miseikis, you make my top ten list. Steve and Arvis were teammates in Constanta, Romania several years back, and it was really good to see him again. The guys talked volley and we all drank beer and caught up - it was good times, reminiscing about the past and thinking about the future, all in a sunny central square of a beautiful alpen town.

5. the FOOD. And the beer. We had some amazing meals - good sauerkraut, sausies, meat and potatoes... it was all good. We had an outstanding lunch in Igls, the hillside town that is home to Innsbruck's bobsleigh track - I think this is the place, even though the pictures of the cafe are very different on the website. The breakfast buffet at the hotel was ah-MAZING - I love breakfast buffets. The food was top quality and they didn't overdo it on the selection. And the coffee was delicious - a whole shiny pot of it that lived at our table, yum.

4. Ten hour sleep: Yes, that's right, I slept for 10 - ten! - hours on Monday night! We put Hendrik to bed around 8:30 and he cried and cried and I lay down on the bed and pretended I wasn't there and fell asleep. In my jeggings. Steve had his work cut out for him, convincing me to take my jeans off and get into pyjamas... I would have happily slept in my clothes. The bed was super comfortable - with quality white linens and an assortment of pillows... yum, again.

3. Ziplining. Okay, so on Tuesday (November 7th) morning we headed up the hill to check out the ski jump, Bergisel, but found it closed from November 7-17... doh. So we decided to have a seat in the park across from our parked car to devise a new plan of attack, and got distracted by the flying fox. While Hendrik napped in his stroller, we did this - it was super fun.

2. Our hotel. Steve found a decent enough deal on booking.com for us to stay at one of Innsbruck's finest, the Grand Europa. The breakfast buffet was amazing, the bed super comfortable, the room stylish and updated, and ? it was great. Plus, we were right in the center, they parked our car for us and we got chocolates on our pillows. LOVED it!

1. The Alpen ZOO. We loved the zoo because Hendrik loved the zoo. There was a bear, there were farm animals and piglets! and moose and lots of other exciting creatures. He loved the fish and all of the water animals - or maybe it was just the water - and belted out lots of "wawa, WAWA!" with strident enthusiasm. It was such a hit that I've actually thought about going back to Innsbruck just to go to the zoo... I mean, it's only 90+ minutes away. We were a the tourist office here in Trento today and there are no zoos or aquariums anywhere in the vicinity. As you can see from all of the photos, this is a clear number one - fun for the whole family!
