colouring with cousins - i love how focused everyone is!
it was great to get together with our cousin eric and his wife les and their kids, molly, finny and luke. (i've linked to her blog several times - it's one of my only regular-reads...) if it feels like steve and i a few steps behind them, it's because we are - eric played professional basketball in europe for many years, and we face the transition they made not too too long ago some time soon. we had an awesome visit and dinner with them at the arbutus club - hendrik coloured with finny and played ping pong (with molly and luke too) while the big people caught up, and after supper the kids ran around in the gym (hendrik showed off his bumps) before we drove home in the pouring, bucketing rain.

beautiful!

With four days to go (!!) until we fly to Beijing, there are lots of lists (oh so many things to do) and lots of tabs open in this browser. I'm tired - today was full, but great; it was sunny, and Hendrik and Alana and I got some quality time in at the beach. And we had some super quality time with Sarah (reading, walking, talking, eating, dancing), in town for the weekend. Now, to bed!! (Solid, detail-oriented blog coming soon, really.......)

this and and that that

I meant to post these pics last time too, but didn't:

on a run bike! thanks kijiji....

I thought Hendrik would be way more into the run bike... but maybe he's just a little too little. And the muffins? They're Marg's best-ever bran muffins, and the batter keeps FIVE weeks in the fridge; this means fresh muffins whenever you like, which equals delicious. Keep reading for the recipe.

And what's what? We leave in one week for Beijing - ak! I'm so so excited, but have trouble looking past the stuff and the bags that need to be packed. I'm hoping I can get it all into three bags, but am not so sure it's do-able. The cloth diapers take up a good slice of the pie, and we're bringing a pack and play - these two things alone might pack a bag themselves. On that note (the cloth diaper one), I'm wondering if it's crazy of us to cart all of these diaps to China... I mean, aren't all of the disposables probably made there? And why should I care about filling China's landfills? Anyways, we're going to try it and see how it goes.

Alana is growing, fast. Most of the 3-6 month and 6 month sleepers that she's been sporting for the past two weeks will stay here for the winter, chez mes parents. She's not a total lunker (I don't think), but is long; the sleeper-feet are full, and there's no real reason to bring anything along that is already snug (I'm thinking about the packed bags). Plus that means I get to go out and do a little bit of shopping myself, something I haven't done much of. And the girl stuff is all so cute! I must not go overboard I must not go overboard I must not go overboard. I must think of the bags, and all of the stuff. Done. I must mention too that she's smiling and starting to coo, and it's the best. I love her!

And Hendrik? Now he IS a lunker. I haven't weighed him since we arrived, but I'd be willing to bet money that he's at least 35 pounds now (ouf). I'm tired, so can't get a thorough blog out here but his favourite book at the moment (I must mention) is The Country Bunny and the Little Gold Shoes, one of the most darling books ever. My mom got a whole whack of Halloween books out, and while she was in the kiddie-book cupboard dug out an extra copy of The Country Bunny; Hendrik has paid no attention to the Halloween books, but has fully glommed on to this one. It's about a mother bunny that has 21 baby bunnies and sort of forgets about her dream of becoming one of the five easter bunnies. And then, because she keeps her little ones so orderly and pleasant and well-behaved, the old wise Grandfather bunny selects her as an Easter bunny and picks her to do one of the most difficult Easter egg deliveries. The pictures are so sweet and so perfect and I love love love this book. Also now, because I'm a mom - the story is a nice reminder that what was once important to me should stay important to me; moms can be moms and be other things too. That day will come... but for now, I'm so lucky to be able to enjoy my two little bunnies, and to see them grow and change before my eyes. Love!

the last few days

doing jobs in the garden with gramma - he was one happy sweeper!
The last few days have really, really felt like fall, though I have to say that the big rains have been nicely complemented by extended periods of patchy, warm sun. We've spent time out in the garden, down at the park, brunching with friends, White Spot pirate-packing, baking (pancakes, muffins) and more. It's so awesome to see my friends! When I'm not here, I miss them. And the days are rolling by - we are getting closer to seeing Steve, yesssss! And I'm not going to give too much of an update on Alana (I am not wanting to invoke Murphy's Law vis-a-vis the sleep department thank-you-very-much) but I will say that she is such a good baby, so good-natured and sweet and lovely and I love her. And, well, Hendrik? Also in love. More (blogging) to come soon, I hope.....

tidbits

Steve's team had a full on photo shoot last week - hair and makeup first (oh can't you tell?), and then six hours of this:
getting the hair done! and look at all of the makeup brushes - !
They're in Qinhuangdao (seaside resort town) for a 10-day training camp, which - via email - I hear is going well (not getting driven into the ground, food is mediocre but edible). And they have Sunday morning off and are going to see the Great Wall - where it begins, near the sea somewhere. If only I could convince him to guest blog on here....

october 16: a few days shy of seven weeks, filling out a 6 month sleeper, and smiling!!

Hendrik is talking about Nicholas the Bunny (from this darling story) in the above video: apparently he's moved out of his hollow tree and into his breakfast strawberry...

a quote taped to the side of the alarm clock in the room - had to share! ("Share your happiness with others today")

a week later

cooking, drawing, baking with Charlie Chicken and outside in the fall sun
What a week it's been! Bowmanville was amazing - fall was fully settling in to bid us farewell, and here in Vancouver, after a full on full day of rain yesterday, the sun is shining - yay! So, I'll work from east to west on these updates. This past week was full of family, packing, food and little outings. Hendrik loved going through the back yard and between the trees to Watson's with Grandma, but wasn't so enthused about toddler play gym in Newcastle. Story time and early morning activities (camping, canoeing, fishing) with Gramma and Gramps upstairs was always a highlight (for both of us), and cuddling under the afghan downstairs for stories at any time of the day was also amazing. The week for me is a bit of a blur - in between feeding Alana and catching sleep and thinking about packing and packing, it all blends together. We had an awesome Thanksgiving dinner last Sunday, and delicious leftovers throughout the week; plus a pumpkin cheesecake for Ralph's birthday on Thursday and my favourite best-ever muffins all week (food food food - this part is somehow less blurry). Alana had some good nights and some bad ones, but is making some progress towards a predictable routine, which is nice for me. Feeding is getting better, finally; I can't wait until it's easy-breezy.
family!
doing some practicing with Gramps - good form!
I got a few bags packed up on Friday, and everything else at the last minute on Saturday afternoon. We ended up with three max-weight bags and two carry-ons; thankfully we didn't have to lug the car seats out west... I felt like we were traveling at capacity as it was. Ralph and Barb and the kids and I folded ourselves into our car, along with alllll of the stuff, and we made it to the airport in plenty of time to unload, get through security and arrive at the gate with both kids and nothing (that I know of) lost. The plane trip wasn't bad, but it's because we got lucky with an extra seat - wait, more because I got lucky with Barb traveling with us (the toddler whisperer?) and an extra seat - and I sat beside the nicest man who was into talking baby and toddler talk the whole time. He has a 2 1/2 year old and is hoping for a baby girl next, so he held Alana (smiles ear to ear) and talked about his son's favourite toys and apps and asked about feeding and all things A-Z, from pregnancy to early baby days. Alana slept some and didn't fuss much when she was awake, and Hendrik stayed busy with aunt until sleep took him just before we landed. It seemed long, the door to door trip, but really it's just a warm-up for Beijing... that is going to be a long trip (it's a 12-hour flight). And get this! So when I called to book for the infants (for Vancouver-Beijing), I tried booking the bassinet - there's a spot for it at the bulkhead BUT... those seats are now for sale - $120. And the bassinet spot on our flight has already been sold! So much for that idea. I want to write Air Canada and complain about the lack of customer service (the dollar comes first), but haven't, as of yet, found the time.

So here we are! Hendrik has adjusted to the time change already, and Alana is getting there - sleeping maybe a bit too much in the day, and not quite enough in the night... but that'll come around I suppose, some time in the next few months. Until then, I can only dream about eight hours of sleep...

Cousins! My sister and her family were in town for a Thanksgiving weekend wedding, so we met in the city for a few hours... it was so so good to meet their little one and see them as parents. Wishing we lived closer!

And Happy Thanksgiving! I'm so so thankful, grateful for my family, and for our health. We had an awesome meal last night chez les Tukkers, and came home and had an awesome night's sleep... yes!

family update

From youngest to oldest:

Our sweet Alana is one month old! And when I try to remember what Hendrik was like at this young age - how he slept, how he ate, how he spent his days - the details are fuzzy. So, at one month our girl is sleeping... as much as a typical newborn sleeps, I think. She usually goes three hours between feeds in the day, sleeping for a pocket of one, or one and a half hours at a time; at night she has had a few near five hour stretches, but as of late, the norm is three, max four hours (if I'm lucky). And this translates to two or three hours (max) of sleep for me, caught here and there... ugh. But really, it's not so bad if I can get back to sleep right away (or so I tell myself). Regardless, I oh so so so look forward to a full, continuous night sleep... when does that happen again? I don't remember. She's eating well and gaining weight (11 pounds) and growing through her newborn stuff and right through her three-month sleepers; I'm wondering if she'll be out of them before we head to China in three-ish weeks. She spends her awake time bobbing her head and eyeing us up; gazing at blinds, spending time on her tummy, and in general, just being cute - these are her main stays I'd say. She likes sticking out her tongue and makes little grunty pig sounds when she starts getting frantic hungry (or when she thinks she's frantic hungry - two hours between meal feasts? How hungry can you be?!), and is strong with her neck and little leg kicks. Is that it? Perhaps.

Hendrik, 22 months (plus 1 week by the time this is posted...)
His favourite thing by far is to ask one of us to "do" an animal; "mommy do t-rex" or "mommy do charlie" (the chicken puppet), or "gramma do the tiger"; this means we put on the almost always same sounding voice and pretend to be said animal. He loves it - lovvvves it - and I mmmm find it cute, and then tedious, because you can't just decide to stop playing. (Instead I will hide the animal and then tell Hendrik that um maybe Charlie went grocery shopping... or down the hall to the kitchen to have a snack - ?) Hendrik usually accepts these reasons as legitimate excuses.) He's back to running around full steam, and, in the last few days anyways, seems to have lost all listening power. He likes riding his tricycle (or being pushed on it), likes blowing bubbles and making up words. He is also a major copycat - we have to seriously watch what we say, because there's a near guarantee that he'll parrot our latest words and try them out himself.
Food: A typical day might look something like this: combo flakes or oatmeal + fruit for breakfast; grilled cheese or peanut butter toast plus veggies and cheese for lunch (and/or chick peas or black beans) and for dinner he eats almost everything that we eat. He passed on the delicious enchilada bake we had the other night, and wasn't internested in butternut squash soup or asparagus or brussel sprouts (I don't blame him on that last one). Corn on the cob is a fave and he loves pizza and burgers - what cultured tastes, no?
Books: Awake to Nap, a Nikki McClure book might be his current favourite. Goodnight Construction Site is up there once more, and an H.A. Rey book almost always sneaks in there.
First thing he does in the morning? We're in the same room at Marg and Bob's house, so unless I'm out here in the main room feeding Alana, I hear him right right away say, "mommy, get down" in his sweet, just-woke-up quiet voice (7:00ish). We might hang out on our bed for a few minutes, and then it's upstairs for stories with Grams and Gramps - they've got the Anthology up there, so there is ample choice each morning. I almost always ask him if he had any dreams last night, and he usually says yes, he did; what? says I. "Trains, again" he'll say. And sometimes he'll add that there are trains in China. And too, that daddy saw one. (True story.)

Me
My updates? Hmmm. I feel like my life revolves around kiddie-care, and that's probably because it does. I do find time here and there to do other things - shower, blog, run an errand here and there, but oh it would be nice to have one more hour in the day for me. To sleep or exercise, or read. I'm looking forward to having the feeding run smoothly; I want it to be comfortable and easy, and to heal. I know it will get there but... can it be there soon? Say, now? I went to a breastfeeding group on Wednesday (Oct 1-5 is Breastfeeding Week in Canada) and - well I want to say that it was a bit ho-hum okay BUT - I won a gift certificate in a prize draw - ! $25 to Chapters, yay. Tomorrow I'm heading into the city to meet up with my sister and her hubby and their little one, Erik and I'm pretty pumped. I hope tonight is a good sleeping night - it could add up to one exhausting day, battling traffic in and out of the city at the start of Thanksgiving weekend. Oooh! And ... I have an iphone - !! Steve, for no reason whatsoever, sent me a gift, and that gift was a fancy new phone, yay yay yay. I've been using a very cheapo been-run-over phone that works... but won't work in China. So I'm all set up for a device there and when we come home in the spring.
getting interviewed upon arrival - link to the video HERE! (and another article something here)

Steve
Is in China, eating Dairy Queen, drinking Starbucks coffee, going to weddings (okay, just one) and training playing training playing. They had a press conference this morning (or yesterday?) to introduce the foreign players, with a jersey ceremony and all. The team has their first games on Monday, and then heads to some unknown location for a week-long training camp, where prep for the season will begin in earnest. We catch up with Steve briefly every morning over (or before or after) breakfast, and it's hard to get all of the details of his day - between food flying and Hendrik asking for more bacon and then running here to get Corduroy and there to get his ambulance and me getting my breakfast and Alana needing hers... the small things that add up to big things get a bit lost in the mix. Here's a video of Team Canada's arrival at the Beijing airport (they were greeted by the media) - more pictures and Steve and Team Beijing info to come soon. Now, it's time to get back to Babyville...
